Stop Expecting To Live Long

 2 MINUTE READ

Living a long life isn't just enough anymore when everyone is looking for a better and more fulfilling life. Longevity has found an entirely different meaning now. So, what is it all about, and is there a way to achieve it?

Have you ever fed a stray dog? Or helped a trapped cat on a tree, freed a bird from its cage, lend a helping hand to a needy? If you did, then you certainly have experienced a different level of serenity and satisfaction at that point because in all of the above cases you would not expect a favor in return and if you did you are a pathetic moron. No offense.

Modern research based on a long 50-year experiment conducted on 3000 individual from all walks of life shows that those individuals who cultivated the attitude of selfless service irrespective of the outcome or precisely, any benefit tend to live longer than those who were engaged in services driven by motives to gain some desired results in their favor.

As more and more people are moving towards a world of the natural and less materialistic way of living, Ayurveda and yogic practices are becoming more and more predominant globally, which primarily focuses on the well being of your mental and physical health without any artificial intervention.
In the book, Charak Samhita, the chapter on Sadvritta conveys that 'Selfless action that is rendered without any personal expectation strengthens mental health and sustains the balance between mind and body, which are crucial for leading a healthy long life.'

Ganesh, a 37-year-old street vendor who sells a blend of beetroot and amla(Indian Gooseberry) juice in the streets of Worli, Mumbai, India. He charges 35 INR (roughly half of 1 USD) for each glass, and the interesting part is that he also keeps neem (Indian Lilac) juice, which is served free. And who you may wonder who would have neem juice, well, there is a demand for over 40 glasses per day. Strange as it might sound. When asked, why he does what he does? He says with a bright confident smile that I make enough for me and my family from selling the beetroot and amla juice, and some customers also offer to pay for the neem juice, but he politely refuses. Something which the modern businesses have failed to realize, that when you are generating ample revenue from selling, you also consider giving something (not useless crap) back to society selflessly.

And, you know what? These little humble acts won't just increase your life span, but would also block ways to all those mental disorders, depression, sadness, and hence slowing down the aging process. Isn't that amazing?

So, what can you do to get access to such benefits?

Well, there is a lot you can do, but we have 3 things that can be done right away:

  1. Start with your home, do one selfless act irrespective of the outcome, offer a glass of water to that courier guy at your doorstep.
  2. Feed/save a poor dog/cat (not your dog, but the ones that are in your vicinity).
  3. Let's not completely forget our own kind and be also kind to the old, weak, poor, hungry who are not that difficult to find.

"Do good. And good will come to you."- Unknown
